You need proper makeup brushes for the application as well. One needs a lot of makeup brushes for various purposes and you just can't have enough of them. Makeup brushes, especially the high-end ones are not cheap, but the best thing about it is that it will last you almost forever if you care well. Makeup brushes, over the time, becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and when you repeatedly use the same brush without cleaning for a long time, chances are that it will cause more damage to the skin than you can imagine. Not only for the purpose of cleanliness but also for a streak free usage one needs to clean the brushes over the course of time.

There are no strict written rules when you should clean the brushes. It completely depends upon the number of times you have used it, the proper way of storing and also how dirty it has become. When you repeatedly use a liquid foundation with the same brush day after day, you would notice that the application isn't satisfactory due to accumulated layers on the bristles, and this is when you should clean them. The same goes for eye shadow and other brushes too. If you hardly use brushes for makeup on a daily basis, then cleaning them once or twice a month would work. Brushes are really delicate and need to be taken care of just like your hair and skin. Therefore, in this articles, we have narrowed the various ways by which you can clean the makeup brushes like a pro keeping them clean and long lasting for an elongated period of time.

Brush Cleaner

Various brands like MAC, Kryolan, Sephora, Ulta, Coastal Scents, Real Techniques, etc. have come out with their own version of brush cleaners which are quite effective and time saving to a large extent. They are extremely easy to travel with and you can clean the brushes at your own comfort. In general, these liquids are mixtures of makeup removers and anti-bacterial potions to clean the brushes of all the makeup product residue as well as keep them germ-free. A lot of professionals use them as they are handy and cleans the brushes very well.

Wet Makeup Removing Tissues

This is the best way to clean the brushes when you are travelling. It is fuss free and efficiently cleans the brushes for a second usage. Buy a pack of makeup removing wet tissue (not regular wet tissues) and simply swirl your makeup brush on it. You would notice how easy the layers of makeup are coming off. It takes some time, so you have to be patient and not vigorously rub the bristles which would harm them. Apply the pressure gently to clean the brushes and then let it dry naturally.

Thorough Cleansing With Shampoo

This is an ideal method used by makeup experts all over the world. In fact, it is the best method of cleaning the brushes thoroughly of every layer of dirt, makeup residue and germs. You can do this once in two weeks for all the brushes. In a clean bowl, fill it with clear tap water and add few drops of shampoo as per the number of brushes you are going to clean. Use a gentle shampoo or shampoo for dry hair which is not very rough with the bristles. Gently squeeze the bristles and form foamy layer to clean the brushes. Do not leave them with the soap water for too long and wash them carefully under running tap water to make sure there is no leftover layer of shampoo. Gently soak the water in a cotton cloth or dry tissue and let them air dry under the fan naturally.

Dishwasher Liquid

You might be surprised to find this, but the dishwasher is excellent in cleaning makeup brushes, especially the eye brushes. Use a proper dishwasher liquid which is gentle, anti-bacterial and has lemon extracts. Use very little amount to clean the brushes, in the same way, like explained above in the case of shampoo. This method cleanses the brush of any layer of germs accumulated over the period of usage and prevents the spreading of bacteria to the skin.

Olive & Baby Shampoo

Olive is an extremely good way of removing makeup and strips off every layer of makeup residue from any surfaces. On the other hand, baby shampoo is gentle yet cleanses the makeup residue or any layer of dirt and residual cream products. In a bowl, fill it with water and pour 4 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo. Mix it well and dip your makeup brushes for 4-5 minutes. Then gently squeeze them to remove the stubborn layer of makeup and dirt. Rinse them thoroughly under tap water, soak the excess water and let them air dry naturally. This is the best method for eye makeup brushes and concealer brushes as it keeps them soft and clean.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

As we all know that baking soda is a great substitute for the shampoo which cleanses the hair of dirt and grime. Vinegar works as a balance of the pH level to keep the strands soft and hydrated. Same goes for the makeup brushes as well. Do this procedure once a month as it is time-consuming. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl until it looks like a white runny liquid. Dip the brushes for few minutes and rub them gently between two fingers to cleanse the makeup residue. Once the brushes look clean, rinse them in clean water. Dip the brushes in a mixture of water and Apple Cider Vinegar in 3:1 ratio. Squeeze the water and let them dry naturally.

Conditioner

This method is for the brushes whose bristles are extremely delicate and you want to keep them soft forever. Mix water and conditioner in a bowl in 5:1 ratio and dip the brushes to clean them. Use gentle pressure to clean the brushes. Once cleaned, hold the brushes under running tap water to clean them. Gently soak the water in a cotton cloth or dry tissue and let them air dry under the fan naturally.

Never Use A Blow Dryer

This isn't exactly a method and more of a precaution that you should follow no matter what. Never use a blow dryer even in the lowest temperature to dry the brushes. Soak the water as much as you can with a dry tissue gently. Hot air will damage the bristles permanently and all your money that you have spent on the brushes will go down the drain. So never use a blow dryer ever to clean the brushes.
