Previously we have seen Fish In Tamarind Gravy recipe and I did recieve good comments as well as mails for that recipe from readers. Now I present to you okra in tamarind gravy. This is a typical Andhra cuisine and is popular among most households in Andhra Pradesh. My home is no exception. I grew up seeing my mom prepare this recipe and an ignorant cook in me used to wonder how does it have this sweet and tart taste at the same time. Well, now I do have an answer as I prepared it recently and it was great. Why don't you try it?
Ingredients:
Okra - 300 grams
Onions - 1 (Finely chopped)
Green Chillies - 3(Finely chopped)
Curry Leaves - 3
Turmeric Powder - 1 tablespoon
Salt - As per taste
Red Chilli Powder - 1 tablespoon
Jaggery - One and half tablespoon
Tamarind Pulp - To be extracted to cup size using 2 spoons of tamarind
Oil - 1 tablespoon
Coriander Leaves - Half bunch
Mustard Seeds - 1 tablespoon
Cumin Seeds - 1 tablespoon
Urad dal - 1 tablespoon
Chana dal - 1 tablespoon
Preparation:
Take the okra and cut them into fine pieces preferably of the size shown in the pictures.
Take a pan to heat and add oil to. Once oil heats up add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal and chanda dal. Wait till they pop.
Add onions, green chillies and curry leaves and fry for 5 mins.
Add the okra pieces and mix well. Cook for 10 mins by closing the pan with a lid.
Post that add the tamarind pulp and cook for another 5 mins.
Add the jaggery which is powdered and mix so that the okra gravy gets its taste. Cook for 10 mins till the gravy thickens and remove from heat.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve the okra stew.
Serving Options:
Serve it with hot steamed rice and enjoy the andhra delicacy.
