Sugar shells/gavvalu is one of the most famous sweets made during the festival season in Andhra Pradesh, India. This is made in sugar syrup and it resembles a shell, hence the name sugar shells. In telugu, it is called gavvalu. It can be prepared by using either wheat flour or all-purpose flour. Why don't you try making sugar shells and treat your family?
Ingredients:
Preparation:
I have used wheat flour here for preparing sugar shells. Prepare a smooth dough by mixing wheat flour, salt, ghee and water.
To prepare sugar shells you need a mould of certain shape as shown in the picture below.
If the above mould is not available, you can use a new comb. Apply oil to the mould and take small piece of the dough in hand and press in and roll it on the mould.
Prepare all the shells in the same way and keep them in a plate. Allow them to stay in open air for 15 mins so that they will not stick.
Take a pan to heat and add sufficient oil in it. Add the shells which we prepared and fry them till they turn light brown in color. Once done, remove them from oil and drain excess oil using napkins. Keep these shells aside.
Prepare sugar syrup by heating water and sugar till it turns into a thick syrup. Also add cardamom powder to it. Then add the shells in the sugar syrup and allow them to soak till the syrup gets absorbed completely.
The delicious sugar shells/gavvalu are now ready to be served.
Serving Options:
Serve the sugar shells / gavvalu as a sweet dish during any festive season.

- Sugar - 1 cup
- Water - Three-fourth cup(for sugar syrup)
- Water - As required(To make the dough)
- Ghee - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - a pinch
- Cardamom powder / Elaichi powder - Half teaspoon
- Oil - To fry

ReplyDeleteI brought it in a steel shop near to my place long back. Its hard to find it now-a-days. Thats why I wrote the alternative to it that you can use a new comb instead :)
