This time, the Olympics 2016 is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5th August to 21st August and we couldn't be more proud of the women representing India. As the nation watched the games of RIO Olympics 2016 with its billion hearts beating, women like Deepika Kumari, PV Sindhu, and Dipa Karmakar represented the nation with their terrific athletic prowess – inspiring every girl in the country to be the next tigress in their respective field. The country witnessed the unflinching dedication of India's sportswomen and how passion, grit, hard work and devotion brought the best out of them. Every woman, representing their country is a 'Diva' in her own right. Let us take a look at the power of Indian women we saw in the RIO Olympics 2016.
PV Sindhu
The girl who made silver look like gold for India. This 21-year-old girl from Hyderabad became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal in Badminton. In the year 2015, she received India's fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. In the RIO Olympics 2016, she won the silver medal as she succumbed to the world's no. 1 Carolina Marin after giving a tough fight. In fact, Sindhu currently ranks tenth in the world.
Dipa Karmakar
What is unthinkable to the country, she has shown that. Hailing from a native village in Bengal, she started her gymnastic journey at the age of 8. A lesser known fact that she and her coach had to hear disapproval and snide comments from people who just couldn't accept girls having such dreams of becoming something. Despite having eradicated equipment for gymnastics in India, she kept on practicing and she is the first Indian female gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics and her death-defying gymnastic feats are awe inspiring. She is also the first female gymnast from India to qualify for the final vault event at the Olympics as well. Although Dipa narrowly missed out on the bronze medal, finishing 4th in the finals of the Olympics with a score of 15.066, she has inspired a million hearts.
Deepika Kumari
Deepika represents Women's Individual Archery and is currently ranked at world no. 5 and is a former world no. 1. She has also received the Arjuna award in the year 2012. While she was growing up, it was difficult for her family to provide her with necessary equipment but still she practiced archery using homemade bamboo bows and arrows. With 640 points, Deepika has secured the 20th position.
Sakshi Malik
In a country like India, we always associated wrestling with a 'man's sport' but Sakshi Malik surely silenced everyone when she won the bronze for Women's freestyle 58 kg in the RIO Olympics 2016. Born in a small town village of Haryana, facing numerous challenges thrown by the society for playing a sport like wrestling, her journey started when she was simply a 12-year-old girl. Sakshi won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and she became the first women wrestler to win a bronze for India.
Aditi Ashok
This 18-year-old golfer has already made it big by becoming first and youngest Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School and currently at the third round of competition and merely 4 strokes left off making it to the top. She hails from Bangalore and started learning golf at the age 5.
Apart from these shining stars, there are various women (total 54) who entered the RIO Olympics 2016. The Indian women's national field hockey team has some star players like Sunita Lakra, Rani Devi, Anuradha Thokchom, Lilima Minz and much more. We have Sania Mirza and Vinesh Phoghat in Tennis, Babita Kumari in Wrestling, Heena Sidhu and Apurvi Chandela in Shooting, Manika Batra and Mouma Das in Table Tennis, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting and much more.
We wish they create memorable and historic moments at the Olympics and make us proud.
