Indian beauty market has a dearth of contouring products and the products started coming up at later stages. Lakme has few products and Maybelline launched few in the Face Studio range. Lavanya sent me the Face Studio V-Face Duo Powder to try out and I have been using this for some time now. The review is slightly long and I have tried to cover every point of how the product is to be used and the lacunas. Scroll down for more.

My Experience with Maybelline Face Studio V-Face Duo Powder Medium Dark:
The packaging of the product is nice and slightly intricate. It has a round compact shape with a sturdy formation. The powder is in a compact form in the first compartment and when you lift the first one, it reveals the second compartment with a mirror and brush. Thus, when you are traveling with it, you won't have to hunt down a mirror or a quick applicator. The powder has dual colors – a dark and a light one. It is in the form of V with the lighter color filling the upper portion. Coming to the brush, it has a flat profile but the bristles are not very soft. It has a little scratchy feeling and thus I don't use it much unless I am on the go.
Coming to the shade, it is outright disappointing in every way. Firstly, it has only two options - Light to Medium and Medium to Dark. Thus the shade range is extremely constrained and won't suffice at all. Secondly, Light to Medium is for pale skin while Medium to Dark is for fair to medium skin tone. This is why I picked the shade Medium to Dark even though I am NC40. Maybelline advises using the mixture of both colors for face, lighter one alone for highlighted areas while the darker one for contouring. I like the amount of yellowish layer or warmth the shade has which is why it doesn't look ashy on my skin.
Coming to the pigmentation, I am not very impressed as the highlighter-contour part applies only to the beginners. When I swirl the colors together and apply all over the face, it looks pretty good and gives a light coverage. It evens out the skin and looks natural. Coming to the light color, it is good for setting under eyes and that's about it. There is no shine to it and it is completely matte, hence good for daytime. The darker color is too light for contouring alone. Either you have to use it to set a creamy dark layer (I use a dark creamy concealer before) or you have to use it as a matte bronzer. The latter is the best use for my skin tone. For a beginner who wants to learn contouring (but doesn't want to go overboard) or for a simple daytime, this would be a good pick for fair to medium skin tones. Otherwise, the shade is slightly misleading.
The texture of the powder is good. It is creamy-powdery to touch and has a soft fine milled texture and applies smoothly on the skin. It will not accentuate fine lines or dryness and can be used by most of the skin types. Also, it has no shimmers and thus completely shines free. It adds a healthy glow and hides the imperfections well. Both the colors blend well on the skin and look natural. Additionally, has SPF 32 PA+++ which protects the skin from sunlight.
The oil control factor isn't there much as my face starts getting oily after a couple of hours. However, you have to note that it is insanely hot and humid in Kolkata and most of the time I spent in a Non AC environment. Therefore, I would not blame the powder much. Note this; the compact has a naturally derived mineral that is extracted from volcanic rock used as an absorbent for oil. The staying power as a compact is good, while for contouring it fails. As a compact, it stayed on my face for 5+ hours in Indian summer while as a highlighter or contour alone, it stays for around 2+ hours.

Final Note:
Maybelline Face Studio V-Face Duo Powder is more of a convenient compact than a contour-highlight one. However, if you are a beginner, you can surely try this out as the price is slightly budget-friendly. But for pro looks, this isn't the one.
